Flashback ’97: Cota Floata beats State

Posted on Feb 23, 2015 by

The ’97 Heels are remembered well for their Final Four run and the future careers of Carter and Jamison, but most forget this team started out 0-3 league play, and hadn’t won on the road in the ACC before this night in Raleigh.

Down 43-44, with 12 seconds left, the former Brooklyn star crosses up on this fool (one C.C. Harrison, wearing #23) from NC State and nails his patented floater which he no doubt perfected in NYC on the playground.

Footage just seconds before the scene of the cross up:

Just seconds earlier…Cota is literally always about to cross someone up:

The ’97 team turned it aroundMostly, Vince Carter -- who had a rocky freshman campaign -- finally looked like a star., and the freshman Cota would head to his first of three career trips to the Final Four(97, 98, 00).

You can watch the floater (and the whole game actually) in solid quality here at the ACC’s actual video vaultThere's all kinds of great stuff in the ACC's video vault -- be sure to check out every win over Duke. (this link will take you to the last play).

Or, just watch the blurry youtube above (fast forward to about 7 minutes for the floatah). At first, we were annoyed that whoever uploaded this clip left in the commercials…until we saw the State University mid-90s commercial at 2:22…which we encourage you to check out.

The two teams would meet a few weeks later in Greensboro:
