Full Yellow Jacket: MBB vs Georgia Tech Preview

Posted on Feb 20, 2015 by

The Tar Heels will take on Georgia Tech this Saturday at noon in the Dean E. Smith Center. It’s the first game since Dean Smith’s death that the Heels will play in the arena with the his namesake.  As UNC head’s into it’s last five games of the season, two of which will be against the Yellow Jackets, the team needs, and I’m sure expects, to win the rest of the games—including the season finale against Duke.

Although the teams haven’t faced off yet this season, expect North Carolina (18-8, 8-5 ACC) to blow Georgia Tech (12-14, 3-11 ACC) out of the water. The Heels are tied for fourth in the ACC, alongside Louisville and Syracuse, while the Ramblin’ Wreck are third from the bottom.. Tech only has two players who average double figure scoring thus far into the season— junior forward Marcus Georges-Hunt, with 13.8, and junior forward Charles Mitchell at 10.0 ppg. Mitchell also leads the team in rebounding, bringing in just under seven rebounds a game.

The Heels have three players averaging double figures in Paige (13.6) and Johnson and Meeks, both at 12.7 (Justin Jackson sits at 9.5 PPG going into Saturday’s match-up). Brice grabs eight boards a game and Kennedy adds 7.6 RPG. The Tar Heels should dominate every aspect of the game, at every position.

I said after the Duke game in my post-game analysis that I was worried about this UNC team. I’m worried that it may be too late in the season for them to find their rhythm. I’m worried that this season has been an emotional toll that is too large to overcome. But the Heels have a chance to remove a great deal of worry if they can put on a dominating performance Saturday afternoon. North Carolina needs momentum going into this back stretch of ACC play. If they can get an impressive win and confidence boost this weekend, they may be able to right the ship.

The Verdict:  North Carolina crushes Georgia Tech, 87-69.
